Take care of your winter coat and it will take care of you

Winter is almost here, it’s time to start pulling out our trusty jackets and coats from the back of the closet. Or maybe you are planning to invest in a new coat this season. Either way, it is very important to take good care of your coats to make sure they serve us for many seasons to come. Our trained stylists share 8 easy tips on caring for your coat.

  1. Always hang your coats on well-made hangers to ensure the weight of the coat does not stretch the shoulder area and never fold your coats as the creases will be hard to get rid of and will impact the overall look of the coat.
  2. Use an electric fabric shaver every now and again to remove any pilling - this will make your coat look brand new again.
  3. Professionally clean your coats every season.
  4. If you have a light stain, try removing it by blotting (do not rub) with cold water or soda using an absorbent cloth.
  5. If you choose to wash your coat at home always follow the care instructions on the label. After washing (if you have a fleece or wool coat) you need to gently squeeze the garment with a large towel and lay it flat to dry. Do not hang the coat with pegs as it will ruin its shape.
  6. Empty pockets of your coats after each use – this will prevent them from losing shape or sagging.
  7. Run a lint roller over your suede, wool and fleece coats after wearing them to remove any fluff, lint or soil.
  8. At the end of the season store your coats in a sealed garment bag with natural cedar balls to prevent moths from getting to them.
